Timing is everything: warm thermals and a late-morning start are what bring the vultures into the sky.
There are not many places in Europe where seeing a griffon vulture is more than a lucky moment. In most places, spotting one soaring high above the landscape is a rare experience. In Uvac Canyon, however, you may first notice a single bird and, a few minutes later, find yourself watching dozens of them circling above the cliffs without a single wingbeat.
That is exactly why choosing the right time to visit matters.
Why Uvac Is So Special
The griffon vulture is one of Europe’s largest flying birds, with a wingspan of almost three meters (10 feet). Despite its size, it moves through the air with remarkable grace, using warm rising currents instead of constantly flapping its wings.
Uvac is one of the most important places for griffon vulture conservation in the Balkans. It is home to Serbia’s largest breeding colony and one of the most significant populations in the region. A few decades ago, the species was close to disappearing here, but years of conservation work helped the birds return to the canyon.
Today, they are not occasional visitors. They nest on the limestone cliffs, feed nearby, and spend their days soaring above the canyon. That makes Uvac one of the best places in the Balkans to observe these magnificent birds in their natural habitat.
The Best Season
The best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn. May, June, July, August, and early September usually offer the best conditions.
The reason has less to do with the calendar and more with physics. Griffon vultures depend on thermal updrafts—columns of warm air that rise from sun-heated rocks. Once they catch these invisible currents, they can glide for long periods with almost no effort.
That is why a warm, sunny day is more important than the exact month. During cool, rainy, or foggy weather, many birds stay on the cliffs, making the experience less impressive. On the other hand, a bright day in late April or September can provide excellent opportunities.
If you have to choose one period, May and June are hard to beat. The canyon is lush and green, the weather is pleasantly warm, and the birds are highly active. July and August are also excellent for birdwatching, although the summer heat can make hiking to the viewpoints more demanding.

Early in the morning, the rocks are still cool, so the warm air currents have not yet formed. Many vultures remain perched on the cliffs or fly lower, making them harder to spot.
The best time usually begins in the late morning. As the sun warms the canyon walls, more and more birds take to the sky. At first, you may notice one. Then another. Soon, the empty sky becomes filled with graceful silhouettes slowly circling higher and higher.
For the best chance of seeing many vultures, plan your visit for around 10 or 11 a.m. and stay through the early afternoon. There are never guarantees in nature, but these are the hours when bird activity is usually at its peak.
What Can You Expect to See?
Some descriptions make it sound as if hundreds of vultures are constantly flying over the canyon. It is better not to expect that.
Although Uvac has a large breeding colony, not every bird is in the air at the same time, and they are not all visible from a single viewpoint. This is a wild landscape, not a scheduled show.
On a sunny day, however, seeing dozens of vultures is entirely possible. Some glide so high that they look like tiny dark shapes against the blue sky. Others pass much closer, revealing their enormous wings and almost effortless flight. Several birds may even circle together, climbing higher on the same invisible column of warm air.
You might also have a quieter day and see only a handful of birds. That is part of the experience. The real attraction is not the number of vultures but the chance to watch these remarkable birds behaving naturally in one of Europe’s most spectacular canyons.
Where to Watch Them
The best experience combines a boat tour through the canyon with a visit to one of the viewpoints.
From the water, you can see the towering cliffs where the vultures nest. Birds often glide overhead or cross the canyon from one side to the other. But from below, it is difficult to appreciate the full scale of the landscape.
The viewpoints offer a completely different perspective. The river winds through dramatic bends, the cliffs drop steeply into the canyon, and the vultures sometimes soar at eye level before disappearing high above the valley.
Allow at least half a day for your visit. Nature follows its own rhythm, and sometimes the most memorable moment comes only after waiting patiently for the sun to warm the canyon.
Why It Is Worth the Trip
The famous meanders of the Uvac River are beautiful on their own. But the canyon becomes something far more memorable when the vultures appear.
They bring the landscape to life. Watching birds with wings nearly three meters wide silently circling above the cliffs gives you a true sense of the canyon’s scale in a way that photographs never can.
Visit between late spring and early autumn, choose a warm, sunny day, and don’t rush there at sunrise.
